This suburb of Karen takes its name from Karen Blixen, aka Isak Dinesen, a Danish coffee planter and lady aristocrat who became one of Africa’s most famous writers. Blixen’s subsequent return to Denmark, led to the writing of the definitive tale of European endeavor in Africa ‘Out of Africa’.

Proceed to Giraffe Manor, situated on a 120 acre piece of land is this home of the Rothschild giraffe. It is about 18 km form central Nairobi. Jack Leslie-Melville and his wife Betty bought it and moved five baby endangered Rothschild giraffes in1974.

The original giraffes have subsequently had their own offspring that now live on the property.

Hand feeding the giraffes is quite an experience especially for children and there is a display of information about the giraffes. You will also see and photograph Warthogs that wonder around the Manor gardens.
